Hissgate: The odd noise impacting iPhone 7 Plus devices

Apple detailed numerous changes and that would impact its new cameras on stage when it first unveiled its new iPhones, but the quality of the new cameras didn’t really set in until we saw Austin Mann’s iPhone 7 camera review.

IPhone 7 users have been left puzzled after some devices began making odd sounds.

Initially noticed by Stephen Hackett of 512 Pixels, the smartphone appears to make a cicada-like sound.

The new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus have been out for just three days now, and already some early adopters have begun to report that all is not right with their shiny new devices.

According to Business Insider, the wired headphones that come with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus can seize up, seemingly at random, minutes after connecting via the iPhone 7’s Lightning port.

It’s most likely coming from the new A10 Fusion processor, since the sound seems to come from the back of the phone, round about where the processor lives.

Apple has not responded to requests for comment on what causes the issue. The tech company is now looking into the problem. But this experience at Apple’s newest store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, was by far the worst. Our best guess at the moment is “coil whine”, which is fairly common in other electronics when they’re under high stress. At the moment, the hissing noise sounds more like an annoyance rather than anything else.

Customers can either trade-in their old phones at an Apple Store or through an online process which requires sending in your old iPhone first and receiving a gift card in return. If you’re suffering from the same problem, try taking your device to a Genius Bar to get a replacement once supplies become available.
