Historic celebration at Independence Nat’l Historical Park

On Saturday August 27th from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. a “Centennial Fair” is scheduled at Gough Park in Silver City to help the people of Grant County to celebrate this important and fun milestone. In honor of its centennial birthday, the NASA unveils the National Parks from space.

100 years ago today, the National Park Service was signed into legislation as an official agency. The following images of parks were taken from outer space by NASA.

The properties in the National Parks System nearest to Ohio University are Hopewell National Historical Park, about one hour away from Athens in Chillicothe, and Cuyahoga Valley National Park near Cleveland.

Keeping the parks in pristine condition is a struggle – there is a $12 billion maintenance back-log. Visitors are invited to share National Park photos on social media using the hashtag #NPS100.

Smith also points to basic infrastructure – like freshwater and wastewater systems, culverts and dams – that are in need of fix or overhaul.

Both the Thursday and Saturday events will include from noon to 1 p.m., “Coffee with the Superintendent”, an opportunity to ask the Superintendent of Gila Cliff Dwellings questions about the monument, the NPS Centennial, Park Service careers or hiring, or anything else.

Smith said many of those facilities – state-of-the-art and spanking new in the 1960s – are now long in the tooth, and haven’t been properly maintained.

“We actually are expecting to have Charles Sheldon’s grandson, Charles Sheldon, come and celebrate with us in February on our actual, real birthday”, McAloon said. “As visitors go up, costs go up, and the system expands”. The NASA Earth’s Observatory have been gathering satellite images of the national parks for years. Ever since the first United States national park was founded in Yellowstone in 1872, numerous other parks have mushroomed into what is now the National Park Service, founded by the then president Woodrow Wilson. “The answer is to push harder for Congress to fund our public lands, not to give them to corporations”.
