Hoffenheim comes back to beat Schalke 2-1 in Bundesliga

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim recorded their first Bundesliga win of the season at the expense of a fifth successive defeat for rock-bottom FC Schalke 04.

“We have actively helped to make it 2-1 from 1-0 ahead”, said coach Markus Weinzierl, appointed in June in place of Andre Breitenreiter who left after failing to earn qualification for the Champions League last season.

“I don’t know where the problem lies”, said Schalke’s goalkeeper Ralf Faehrmann, while his defence did him no favours in Hoffenheim.

Elsewhere, newcomers Leipzig and Cologne remain unbeaten in the Bundesliga season 2016-2017 as they shared the spoils following a 1-1 stalemate.

“We’re in a situation where words fail me”. “We are making too many mistakes and that’s what happens when you don’t have confidence”. “It’s getting more hard week by week”.

Swiss striker Breel Embolo – who has so far failed to justify the 22 million euros Schalke paid Basel for him – fired in a cross which Cameroon striker Eric Choupo-Moting headed home at the far post.

Things went from bad to worse for the “Royal Blues” after the woodwork denied Klaas-Jan Huntelaar’s header on target before Lukas Rupp secured the victory 2-1 following an assist from Kerem Demirbay in the 41st minute. Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann’s quick thinking foiled Chile global Eduardo Vargas moments later as the Royal Blues went down with barely a whimper. Leipzig is supported by an Austrian energy drink maker and rose through the minor leagues to get promoted.

Yuya Osako drilled a shot into the top left-hand corner of Peter Gulacsi’s goal, beating the Leipzig custodian inside his near post to bring Cologne level after 25 minutes.
