Hogan Proclaims Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month

Held each year on the summer solstice, which is the longest day of the year, the event is meant to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and symbolizes the challenging journey those living with the disease and their caregivers endure each day. “The Longest Day honors the strength, heart and endurance of people with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers”.

As Cumberland area residents are raising money for research and support, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan today issued a statewide proclamation announcing June as Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month in Maryland.

The Central and Western Virginia chapter is hoping to raise $48,000 dollars from the fundraisers celebrating the “Longest Day”. People are asked to wear purple and share their photos on social media using the hashtags #ENDALZ and #TLD. This will be the fourth year that the American Contract Bridge League will be participating, with 168 teams in all 50 states holding tournaments, teaching bridge and hosting games. Global Teams NuStep, PS Lifestyle and Senior Lifestyle living communities are also sponsors of this year’s events.

“One of the preventative ways to prevent Alzheimer’s disease is to keep your brain active”, Leclair said.

The goal is to find a cure for Alzheimer’s, or at least a way to slow this disease that affects more than 5 million Americans and 15 million caregivers.
