Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday and relief pitcher Seth Maness will undergo separate surgeries this week, the team announced Tuesday.

St. Louis Cardinals slugger Matt Holliday is scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday to fix his broken right thumb, the team announced.

Holliday was struck in the hand by a pitch from Chicago Cubs reliever Mike Montgomery on Thursday night in Chicago.

According to Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, the hand specialist informed Holliday that having surgery now would be his only path to return this season. “He wants to play”.

Maness became the 12th player to hit the disabled list for the Cardinals since July 1.

Tommy Pham and Brandon Moss have seen time in left field in Holliday’s absence.

The 36-year-old Holliday, a seven-time All-Star, is batting.242 this season with 19 home runs and 60 RBIs in 107 games.

The St. Louis Cardinals placed Maness on the DL with a right elbow strain. He still managed to pitch 31 2/3 innings in between disabled list stints, putting together an ERA of 3.41, and recently wrapping up a scoreless streak that spanned 14 1/3 innings in 11 appearances. Maness has been replaced by Sam Tuivailala, who was recalled from Class AAA Memphis.
