Holliday reinjured, Cardinals fall to Reds 1

The Reds were able to help the Pittsburgh Pirates (59-41) come to within 4.5 games of St. Louis, but Cincinnati will look to prevent the Pirates from getting any closer as they head to the Queen City for a four game series starting Thursday.

The Reds ended a nine-series losing streak in St. Louis and have won consecutive games at Busch Stadium for the first time since July 6 and September 2, 2011.

Cardinals’ starter Lackey worked eight strong innings, allowed two hits, one earned run, walked one, and struck out eight. Mark Reynolds entered the game at first, moving Stephen Piscotty into left field. Aroldis Chapman met little resistance in the ninth inning as he retired the side in order, including All-Stars Jhonny Peralta and Yadier Molina for his 21st save of the season. Lackey’s counterpart, Anthony DeSclafani (6-7) was just as brilliant as Lackey.

Results of an MRI won’t likely be known until morning, but if there is another quad tear it could cost Holliday another several weeks and perhaps the whole season. The last time the Cardinals scored was in the fourth inning of Monday night’s contest.

Holliday pulled up lame while running to first in what turned out to be a double play to end the first inning.

Cardinals: RHP Jordan Walden (right bicep) began a rehab stint at Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, pitching two-thirds of an inning in his first work since going on the disabled list on April 30.

With or without Holliday, the Cardinals’ offense has been below average in the last 26 games, managing only 88 runs and hitting less than.
