The addition of a petrol variant will be crucial more now than ever before particularly for Toyota’s performance in the major vehicle market of Delhi, where the diesel Innova can not be sold as its engine size falls in the banned category of 2000cc and above.
Owing to the ban on diesel-engined passenger vehicles with displacement more than 2,000 cc in NCR, manufacturers like Toyota, Mahindra and luxury auto makers like Mercedes-Benz have been affected.
The recently launched Innova Crysta, which is now available only with a diesel powerplant, is to get a petrol-engined sibling. The R&D department is working in conjunction with Japanese engineers to expedite the completion of the new petrol engine.
“Delhi-NCR is the biggest market among other regions of the country”.
Toyota on Friday stated that it has actually gotten over 15,000 bookings for the second generation of its 11-year-old flagship model Innova Crysta, under 10 days of launch. Powering the Crysta are two diesel engines with the option of an automatic transmission.
The MPV has been launched with 2.4-litre and 2.8-litre diesel engines.

The new vehicle is over 4 lakhs more expensive than the retired model (comparing the top-end variants) but has a lot of goodies to show for it. Interestingly, Toyota says that around 60 per cent of the Innova Crysta bookings are for the automatic trims. “This year, the sales figure will be in that region”, Shetty said today. Primarily available in four variants – G, Gx, Vx, and Zx, the new Toyota Innova Crysta is priced from 13.83 lakh to 20.77 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). The Innova has been the segment leader and Toyota looks forward to further strengthen it by achieving a sale of around 35,000 units in a month.
