Home Run Derby 2016 Open Thread

Remarkably, Marlins masher Giancarlo Stanton had participated in just one Home Run Derby until Monday night’s one-man exhibition in raw power.

Stanton belted an Major League Baseball record 61 home runs throughout the derby last night. Before he entered the batter’s box Monday at Petco Park in San Diego for the annual Home Run Derby, he was down 24-0 to Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton and Frazier were both chosen for the Home Run Derby without being chosen for the All-Star Game.

Stanton hit 20 homers in the final round to best defending champion Todd Frazier of the Chicago White Sox. Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts hits fifth, ahead of Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer, Bosox right fielder Mookie Betts, Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez and Red Sox left fielder Jackie Bradley. Stanton followed with 17 homers in the second round, a total Trumbo, whose 28 homers lead the majors, couldn’t match.

Last night Marlins outfielder won the MLB All Star Weekend Home Run Derby. Players had four minutes to hit as many home runs as they could, receiving a 30 second time bonus if they hit two or more home runs of 440 feet or more. The longest hit ball of the night was Stanton’s 497 feet, a mark he hit twice. Myers had not been hit by a pitch during the first half of the season.

He’s tied for second in the National League and tied for fourth in baseball. In the remaining rounds, three generations of Cano, his son, and his father and derby pitcher Jose, sat together enjoying a ideal evening in San Diego.

Cano went from longshot to impossibility in a mesmerizing first-round performance by Stanton.

Until last season and Joc Pederson’s run to the finals, the Home Run Derby has been disappointment for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Hometown favorite Will Myers, who plays for the Padres, managed just 10 home runs in the first round, which just wasn’t enough to advance as Duvall hit 11 and still had 90 seconds left on the clock. Only two other players had a streak of at least five in a row – Mark Trumbo (who homered on nine straight swings to win the first-round) and Carlos Gonzalez (who had a run of five in a row).
