‘Homeland’ Casts Female President for Season 6

Marvel, a 46-year-old native of Orange County, California, will play the role of NY senator-turned-president-elect Elizabeth Keane, in a storyline set to unveil when the show returns to the air next year.

“The whole season takes place between Election Day in November and the inauguration of a new president in January, during this unusual and interregnum where a very fragile transfer of power takes place between the outgoing president and the incoming president-elect”, Homeland showrunner Alex Gansa told EW.com in May. The show’s decision to go with a female President is drawing attention because of the possibility of that happening in real life, with Hillary Clinton as the first woman Presidential nominee from a major party. Also, the character of Keane is a former New York Senator. “She’s bright, charming, lively, and, if the need arises, blunt”. She is now living in Brooklyn and working at a foundation aimed at providing aid to Muslims living in the country.

Earlier this month, the Showtimes drama received four Primetime Emmy Award – including for outstanding drama series, for outstanding lead actress in a drama series (Danes) and outstanding directing for a drama series (Leslie Linka Glater). Production on the latest run begins in NY in August and will premiere in 2017 after a longer than usual hiatus.

Marvel is no stranger to playing politics.
