Homeless man hailed as a hero after reporting backpack bombs

“A third to Ivan White, a third to Lee Parker and the other third to the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless, because that’s one of the organizations that’s been on the forefront of helping homelessness”, explained Don Gonclaves with At Heart’s Length.

Parker is staying at a local hotel paid for by an Elizabeth nonprofit that helps the homeless and working poor.

When Lee Parker found a backpack near the Elizabeth train station Sunday night, he thought it would be useful for storing food.

“I’m just glad I was able tor realize what the situation was and react in such a way that, thank goodness, no one got hurt”, said White, an Elizabeth resident.

After he spotted the bag, Parker, who’d been on the job hunt, thought it’d be flawless to use for work, he told CBS New York.

The suspect believed to be responsible for the bombs, Ahmad Khan Rahami, was apprehended Monday following a shootout with police.

On Wednesday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation released a photo showing the two unidentified men who found a second bomb allegedly left by Rahami, made from a pressure cooker, inside a piece of luggage in Chelsea on Saturday night.

“Hero? Nah, I won’t go that far”, Parker told WABC, adding he was “just doing the right thing”.

“These men were first identified as homeless, but they shouldn’t be anonymous”, she said. “They deserve to be known”.

Parker says he replays in his mind what would have happened if the backpack exploded while they carried it.

NY police meanwhile said Wednesday they are seeking two pedestrians filmed handling the unexploded pressure cooker bomb found late Saturday just blocks from where a bomb blast injured 29 people.

Surveillance cameras caught the two walking down West 27th Street and coming across a duffel bag that had been left in the street. “Placed it on the sidewalk and rolled the bag away”, O’Neil said.

Elizabeth mayor Chris Bollwage hailed the pair on Monday as saviors to their community – and very lucky in their own right.

Late Tuesday, authorities charged Rahami with bombing, property destruction and use of weapons of mass destruction regarding a bombing in Chelsea on Saturday night that injured 29 people, as well as pipe bombs planted in Seaside Park, New Jersey, on Saturday and Elizabeth on Sunday night.
