Homer in 9th spoils Hendricks’ no-hit bid as Cubs top Cards

“It’s got to catapult him in the minds of people voting (for the Cy Young Award) right now”, manager Joe Maddon said after Hendricks (15-7) lowered his major-league-leading ERA to 2.03.

St. Louis remained a half-game behind the Mets for the second NL wild card.

Joe Maddon had his guys go out to the mound to kill some time to let Chapman throw a few more warm-up pitches, but apparently umpire Joe West wasn’t having it.

As Montero went to the mound for a second time, Maddon came out to argue with West and was tossed.

Aroldis Chapman got the final three outs, but Hendricks doesn’t have to overwhelm hitters with triple-digit velocity, because he knows how to minimize damage and pitch away from slugging percentage.

Hendricks struck out seven and walked two. The Giants, Marlins and Rangers have also had no-hit bids broken up in the ninth inning this season.

Hendricks was looking to become just the second pitcher to throw a no-hitter this season, hoping to have joined teammate Jake Arrieta, who accomplished the feat back on April 21 against the Cincinnati Reds.

Elsewhere, starting pitcher Mat Latos hit a solo home run and Anthony Rendon added a three-run shot as the NL-East leading Nationals beat the Mets 8-1.

Boston reliever Junichi Tazawa worked one scoreless inning and walked one batter.

For the Cubs, this masterpiece cut the magic number to clinch the division down to three. Chris Davis and Manny Machado homered for the Orioles, who fell three games behind the Red Sox.

NEW YORK – Rookie Jose De Leon pitched five effective innings, and Yasiel Puig and Justin Turner hit late home runs as Los Angeles capitalized on two errors by New York en route to a victory.

Garcia has lost four straight starts and has posted an 8.06 ERA over his last five outings, allowing nine home runs over that span. As Matt Snyder from CBS Sports pointed out, the game hadn’t even passed the 2 ⁄2-hour mark, and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that happen before. Yasiel Puig and Justin Turner homered for the Dodgers. Jeremy Hellickson limited the Pirates to an unearned run and three hits in 6 1/3 innings.

The Dodgers previously had played just one day at Yankee Stadium since interleague action started in 1997, splitting a doubleheader in 2013. It was the only hit they would get all night.

The Indians’ division lead was trimmed to six games over Detroit.

Miguel Gonzalez (4-6) was strong over 6 2/3 innings. No punches were thrown.

Toronto is the top wild-card team in the AL, one game ahead of Baltimore. Ezequiel Carrera had a tiebreaking, pinch-hit homer in the eighth off Brad Boxberger (3-1).

Cleveland’s lead in the AL Central was trimmed to six games over Detroit, which rallied for a 4-2 victory over Minnesota. Right-hander Keone Kela (5-1) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief for Texas. It was a good pitch he threw me.

Alex Wimmers (1-2) took the loss. He has six home runs, six doubles and 19 RBIs in 16 games against the Astros this season.

The teams combined for 34 hits. Jason Hammel gets the nod, and he’s 14-8 with a 3.50 ERA and 127 strikeouts this season. Brian Ellington (2-2) took the loss.
