According to a criminal complaint filed Thursday, David Michael Easter, 26, of Brownsdale called 911 from Myre-Big Island State Park near Albert Lea Tuesday evening and said he had shot a man in self-defense.

Bail was set at $200,000 with conditions and $500,000 without conditions.

David Easter did not provide a statement and asked for an attorney, Sheriff Kurt Freitag said.

Easter reportedly told police he shot the victim in self defense, and that the victim was still in his auto in the park. The victim’s foot was on the brake of the vehicle.

His name has not been released, pending autopsy results.

Helmer Myre Big Island State Park is about 90 miles south of Minneapolis.

Freitag adds that the suspect told police the victim had approached him with an object he called a bat. She told police her husband usually carries a gun, and has a permit that is valid in Nebraska.

Walker said it’s unclear if Easter and the victim knew each other. Pending no criminal record is found, Easter faces a presumptive sentence of more than 25 years in prison. David Easter’s next court appearance is September 8.
