Honda expands Takata air bag recalls as crisis widens

You’ve all heard and read about Takata and its defective airbag inflators that caused injuries and even deaths. We anticipate that owners of the affected models will be able to confirm their vehicles’ recall status on these sites beginning on February 15, 2016.

Continental Automotive Systems has informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of potentially faulty electronic airbag systems that could result in airbags deploying when they shouldn’t or failing to deploy when they should.

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage all owners of affected vehicles to take them to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification from Honda that replacement parts are available for their vehicles.

Last year, Mercedes recalled 126,260 C-Class cars from 2008 and 2009 and 2010 GLK350 vehicles.

Honda said, however, that replacement parts are presently scarce and can only be requested for cars with air bag issues and with vehicle damage.

Numerous other 11 automakers using Takata airbags are likely to expand their recalls as well as they determine which models contain the newer airbags that need to be replaced.

Carmakers are grappling with another air-bag crisis sparked by Takata-made devices that explode with too much force and shoot shrapnel at occupants.

A spokeswoman for Continental Automotive, Mary Arraf pointed out that the company had already produced two processes that would reduce, if not completely counter the issue.

A VW spokesman said the company did not known how many Chrysler-built Routan minivans are involved. Previously the Takata airbag recall had pertained to older models, generally from model year 2008 and earlier. American Honda Motor Co. late Wednesday said it is recalling 2.23 million Honda and Acura vehicles as part of that action.

In the statement, Honda said it has received no reports of a ruptured “PSDI-5” inflator in any Honda or Acura vehicle worldwide.

Continental says only a portion of the 5 million affected cars are in the US, but an exact number wasn’t available.

The recent death of a SC man highlighted the risks posed by cars that contain Takata air bags, but have not been recalled. Instead, this is an extension of the Continental recall affecting 112,001 Chrysler, Dodge, and Volkswagen vehicles we wrote about earlier today.
