Honduras Strikes Back at Trump’s Threat over Migrant ‘Caravan’

The agreement codifies the idea that asylum is meant to shelter people in the first safe country in which they arrive, not a country based on asylum seekers’ economic preferences.

South of the border, free trade has helped modernize Mexico by creating millions of jobs, boosting investment flow and helping to diversify the country’s manufacturing sector.

The organization also pointed out that since the start of the caravan, the “right-wing white supremacists have responded by threatening and calling for violence against its participants and supporters”. What exactly is it?

“I’m going to have a relaxing Coke”, she told BuzzFeed News.

“I hope a large majority decide to stay in Mexico now that we’ve seen the reaction from hate groups in the United States”, he said. And they have done this several times before.

“The causes of immigration are violence, drug violence, drug trafficking”. Many migrants are extorted, robbed by organized crime gangs, and they encounter along the way many corrupt Mexican officials, too. “They stood by us when it came to that Jerusalem vote'”.

Migrants had to meet strict criteria to qualify for DACA; among other requirements, they had to prove that they had resided in the USA for at least five years.

Since taking office more than a year ago, Trump has focused on cracking down on legal and undocumented immigration.

“The crime rate is frightful; you can’t live there”, she said. “They have very strong border laws – ours are pathetic”. They want to protect them – their rights as migrants and people seeking asylum.

The tactic is vintage Trump: Threaten a would-be foe or figure he wants to do his bidding, usually on Twitter, in a gamble they will give in. “Despite their being in Mexico without authorization, no one has made any effort to stop them”.

Earlier Sunday, “Fox and Friends”, one of Trump’s favorite TV shows, highlighted the caravan on Twitter, possibly drawing the president’s attention.

The contingent undertaking the daunting journey to the southern frontiers of Mexico to reach the USA comprises of children, newborns with their mothers, men, and women, where the families, mostly mothers with their children have to arrange for water, food, and shelter for the vulnerable section of the caravan.

“DOS [Department of State] should attempt to negotiate a safe-third country agreement with Mexico”, Arthur wrote. In addition, Trump underplays the increasing robustness of USA immigration laws and enforcement even under his predecessors, while downplaying how porous Mexico’s own southern border is. Is Mexico really more strict about who it admits? However, and as the Flores report continues, during last Tuesday some officers were trying to impede the marchers to leave the areas where they were spending the night.

Under Mexican law, Central Americans who enter Mexico legally are generally allowed to move freely through the country, even if their goal is to cross illegally into the United States. “They laugh at our dumb immigration laws”. NAFTA and relations with the USA generally and Trump specifically are expected to emerge as critical issues. Those detained after crossing the border also are sometimes released due to bed shortages and a court ruling that limits the detention of women and children in custody to 21 days. It’s a tough situation, too, here in Mexico.

Honduras may be bearing the brunt of President Trump’s ire today over immigration, but only a few months ago it was receiving accolades from the administration.

KAHN: Right. Polls put populist leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in a – nearly a 20 percent lead here now. He tweeted his feelings on the topic Sunday morning. “Mexico and its people will not be the pinata of any foreign government”, Lopez Obrador said. And he has spoken loudly about his opposition to the way Mexico is being treated.
