Honeymoon over for runaway groom

A Victoria Police Association representative says that Shomshe should never have been released because a wedding does not “meet the show cause or exceptional circumstances in the bail application”, according to the Guardian.

A bride whose new husband abandoned her and skipped out on his bail has supported the runaway groom in court.

It was revealed on Monday that police had checked on Shomshe at his home just hours before he ran off on July 27.

A Victoria police spokeswoman said that Taskforce Fugitive detectives arrested Shomshe at around 10am on Tuesday in the Melbourne suburb of Campbellfield.

Instead he fled, reportedly while his bride was taking a shower.

Despite police opposition, Shomshe was granted bail by County Court judge Richard Maidment on July 24 after the 33-year-old successfully argued he would lose his $6,000 deposit if he did not Wednesday Belinda.

Shomshe is known to frequent the Epping, Altona, Werribee and Coburg areas.

Shomshe had skipped bail on three separate occasions and has convictions for drugs, violence and weapons offences.

“Some of the people he’s associating with seem to connect him to some of the bikie gang side of things”, Victoria Police chief commissioner Graham Ashton told 3AW.

“It was a court decision”, he said Monday.

‘Whenever someone is bailed and they abscond I’d call that an error, ‘ he told reporters on Monday.
