Honor fallen warriors on Memorial Day

Memorial Day ceremonies will be held throughout the region Monday, honoring those who gave their lives while serving in the military. The ceremony will also include a 21-gun salute, ending with the raising of the flags.

Parades are festive occasions for young and old, but on Memorial Day they take on a special meaning for veterans. In the event of rain the ceremonies will be held in the fire hall. At 8:15 a.m., the American Legion accompanied by the Hoosick Falls High School Band will march from Wood Park to the Shop Bridge to honor the men of the Navy who lost their lives at sea.

Thousands of flags were placed at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado Friday afternoon to prepare for Memorial Day.

More than two dozen volunteers turned out on Saturday to help place American flags on the graves of veterans at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.

Hayes Road northbound traffic will stop at 9 a.m. for the parade lineup, then closed to all traffic at 9:30 a.m. for the parade. The guest speaker for this observance is scheduled to be Major Michael Meissel- Program Director, AMEDD Enlisted Commissioning Program based at Fort Knox.

Williamsburg Memorial Park, 9:40 a.m., free and open to the public.

Noon – Floral Gardens Cemetery, 2215 W. Cass Ave.

A bugler from the American Legion Post 558 of Plains Township played military standards while a small group offered a rifle salute in front of the hospital’s main entrance.

In Winters, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 11091 will conduct the Annual Memorial Day Service at the Winters Cemetery at 10 a.m. After a brief ceremony at the memorial, the procession will continue to City Cemetery on Liberty Street.

Elected officials representing the city at the state and federal level also had a presence in the parade, including U.S. Rep.
