Honor Students Banned From Wearing Emblems During Graduation

So the graduate students at Plano Senior High School will not be able to wear their National Honor Society stoles during their once in a lifetime graduation ceremonies next month. “We are aware that many honor students may not also be members of the National Honor Society, but the school has opted not to include additional regalia per tradition”. According to the organization’s website, students must have a cumulative GPA of 85, B, 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, volunteer in the community, have leadership experience, and maintain good characters.

He’s disappointed because his friends at other high schools in Plano, TX, are allowed to wear the white satin stoles with the NHS seal around their necks to adorn their cap and gown.

Frederick’s mom, KellyAnn Frederick, contacted the school but said an NHS sponsor “claimed school administrators want everyone to feel included in graduation and not single students out”.

“I’m not just an honor student – I’m an NHS student. I worked hard, I put in the hours”, Plano student Garrett Frederick told the ABC affiliate.

Each high school in Plano high ISD has established its own practices.

Until recently, Frederick thought he’d be able to wear one.

As one Fox News commenter wrote: “I think graduations are offensive to the kids who didn’t graduate, they should cancel the whole thing”.

The school has not made a statement on the matter.

‘I was really looking forward to wearing it and being able to say I was a part of it, because I have friends that go to [Plano East High School] and [Plano West High School], and they’re all wearing it, ‘ he told WFAA.

Although school officials at Plano Senior High School say they will not allow students to be individually recognized for their academic achievements, school administrators have no problem with posting on their website, (without naming their names).
