Hoops Habit: Dallas Mavericks Should Keep Tyson Chandler

He spent the last seven seasons with the Clippers. With a salary cap that’s expected to be $68 million for the 2015-16 NBA season, the team will be hard-pressed to replace him at the center position.

As the start of NBA free agency looms, unrestricted free agent center DeAndre Jordan has several teams on his radar. “But after years of feeling like the third guy at best on the team, the fact other teams are going to pump up his ego – as Parsons is already doing – will play well with a guy wanting that recognition”. That list includes the neighboring Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks and the Milwaukee Bucks.

“And at the end of the day, I get it. The franchise [has] to make the best decision for the franchise”.

Is there as much as $5 million difference, or more, between these two players?

The Knicks drafted Kristaps Porzingis on Thursday, but it won’t stop them from pursuing Jordan, who averaged 11.5 points and 15.0 rebounds on top of 2.2 blocks per game last season. It’s not just the free-throw problems (though those are substantial).

It is fair to question if Jordan can fit into the scheme the Knicks use offensively, as he is extremely limited on that side of the ball. Maybe the bright lights of the Big Apple can lure him in to Madison Square Garden.

Dallas’ uncertain point guard situation is especially troublesome because Jordan benefits so greatly from CP3.

Jordan is not the only Clippers free agent the team has interest in bringing back. These teams feature tiny in the way of overlap – apart from maybe the Lakers and Knicks, these squads all offer very different experiences. Last year, he held Chandler Parson’s contract signing in a Dallas superclub. Could a Rondo- Carmelo Anthony duo work?

He’s not a superstar, but he can shoot.

So when someone else was creating offense for him, he was an absolute monster.

Monroe has now played five seasons in the league, all with Detroit. Green is a terrific shooter, but he’s obviously not a superstar meaning he won’t come at an extremely high price.

New York is in an interesting situation.

Some NBA execs are convinced ex- Marquette standout Wes Matthews will be bolting Portland in free agency.

That Jordan will explore free agency is no surprise; it’s been assumed for months.

Since the Knicks let Lin leave via restricted free agency in 2012, the results have been mixed.

Whether there have been multiple attempts by Kobe to recruit Jordan to the Lakers – or merely just a phone call to pry him away from their L.A. rivals – is uncertain.
