October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a designation that serves to raise awareness and dialog about domestic violence, which has a profound effect on a child’s well-being and development. One-half of all homeless women and children in the US are fleeing domestic violence.
“We know you are exhausted”.
“We serve all victims: men, women and children”, Millsaps said.
A common misconception with domestic violence is that abuse has to be physical, officials said.
In a proclamation signed by Mayor Barry Brickner, on behalf of City Council, in a resolution passed Monday night, the City of Farmington Hills recognizes “domestic violence is a widespread, serious crime that annually affects over four million Americans of all races, ages, genders, and income levels”.
Through information provided by the state police, the family violence project says that there have been 6 domestic homicides in the state of Maine since January of this year. Children who grow up in homes with domestic violence often witness violence on a daily basis, live in fear and blame themselves. “It doesn’t always leave a mark”, Millsaps said.

“People care, the community cares about them, they don’t want this to happen, nobody deserves to be abused” said Bell. “Sometimes we hear the one member of the family makes all of the money, but they have to turn it over to the other person in the relationship and never have access to the money”.
