Hope Solo Taunted by “ZIKA” Chants in Olympic Opener

If Solo makes Saturday’s scheduled start against France in group play, it will be her 200th cap in global play.

“At the end of the day it’s about winning and you can’t win without being intense”, said Solo.

Solo has been quick to backtrack on previous comments regarding the dangers of competing in Brazil. “I came here to do one thing, and that’s to help our team win, our country win”.

Given the team’s successful track record, Solo will be in Brazil for a while.

It’s something Solo already knows a lot about.

Whether Hope Solo is being booed for speaking out against the Zika virus during the Rio Olympics, or posting her thoughts on her Instagram, Twitter, or her own website, it’s needless to say that Solo isn’t afraid to speak her mind.

Just like in the World Cup, the USA backline proved impossible to break, leading to a comfortable second half once the two-goal advantage was established. A position she didn’t like at all as a kid. The Olympic tournament is the first major competition for the USA since the retirement of key players such as Abby Wambach and Lauren Holiday following last year’s world title in Canada.

“I was pretty focused on the game”. And then at the exact moment Solo sent the ball upfield… “And I expect no less here”.

“I really don’t care what is chanted at me at any point in any game, to be honest”.

Hope Solo dissed Brazil on social media. Solo said that she wants to “start a family” one day and thus had concerns about traveling to Brazil.

Today she is as intense on the field as ever, practicing into the night ready to show the world it has yet to see the best.

Hope Solo is a household name and the rare Olympic gold medalist who invites as much scorn and controversy from soccer fans as she does celebration and cheers.

“Over the past few months, I’ve done a lot of research and spoken to a number of infectious disease specialists”, Solo told Sports Illustrated. She maintained that her nephew was the aggressor and that she was just defending herself; her nephew said in a sworn deposition that Solo lunged at him first.
