Hopkins’ Amir Coffey announcing decision today; Gophers favored

Coffey will announce his decision at 3:30 p.m. Monday from Hopkins High School and he’ll be choosing between the Gophers, Wisconsin, Penn State, Michigan State, Indiana, Texas, Baylor and Arizona, the Star Tribune reports.

“I developed a strong relationship with all the coaches, [assistant] coach [Ben] Johnson and [head] coach [Richard] Pitino”, he told reporters. “And the chemistry I have with a lot of the players off the court – I’m friends with them already”. He joins another in-state product, three-star small forward Michael Hurt, in Minnesota’s Class of 2016. Coffey, who may end up as a combo guard for the Gophers, is also listed as the top recruit in Minnesota for the class of 2016 and the 33rd best recruit overall by ESPN. White never played with the Gophers after going through legal issues away from basketball and eventually left Minnesota to play at Iowa State for one season.

“It just felt right”, Coffey said.

Coffey returned from his knee rehabilitation to participate in the Pacesetter Sweet Sixteen Basketball Championship in St. Cloud in August, averaging more than 25 points in four games. They’re good people. It felt like home.

Last year, though, the Gophers got a commitment from DeLaSalle’s Jarvis Johnson, who was the first high school player from Minnesota to sign with Pitino.

Coffey follows in the footsteps of his dad, Richard Coffey, who is a former Gophers star. Some programs wanted him to play forward because of his height.

“Coffey, a 6’7”, 180-pound shooting guard from Hopkins, Minnesota, is viewed as a four-star recruit according to 247 Sports. “Amir knew them – they played pickup ball together”. “After his visit, he came home and said, ‘I think I want to go to Minnesota.’ I started to get real excited”.
