Don’t Breathe follows three people who attempt to rob a blind war veteran, but things don’t go according to plan for them.

Director and co-screenwriter Fede Alvarez shot here because deserted homes add to the character, the Free Press reported last week.

Sony Pictures Marketing Chief Josh Greenstein noted how rare it was for a film in this genre to have resonated so deeply with critics. Of course, out of all of those movies, Don’t Breathe has received the most critical acclaim, sitting at an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes as of press time.

The horror story joins other successful and scary summer movies, like The Conjuring 2, Lights Out, and The Purge: Election Year, which were also made with relatively small budgets. “(They) can nearly always be counted on to make money”. The thriller “Don’t Breathe” took the top spot in theaters with an impressive $26.1 million. The supervillain ensemble movie places a distant second with $12.1 million (£9.2 million), helping to boost its domestic take to $282.9 million (£216 million) in its three weeks on release.

Kubo and the Two Strings didn’t demonstrate any second weekend word-of-mouth resurgence, leaving it in position to become the best reviewed box office bomb of the year. The first, “The Mechanic”, about an elite hitman, opened to $11 million when it was released by CBS Films in 2011. The raunchy animated flick “Sausage Party” landed in fourth place with $7.7 million to edge the flick even closer to the $100 million mark at the domestic box-office.

TheJason Stathamaction sequel Mechanic: Resurrection debuted in fifth place, raising 7.5 million dollars.
