Horror-Comedy “Krampus” Almost Knocks “Mockingjay” From Top Of Box Office
Krampus was no match for Katniss at the North American box office this weekend as Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part Two held on to the number one spot for a third weekend in a row.

The holiday horror-comedy “Krampus” outperformed expectations in its debut to come in No. 2 in this week’s most popular movie line-up.
After grossing $32.4 million this past weekend at the overseas box office, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 has now grossed $524.17 million. Pixar’s second film of 2015 was supposed to have a stronger hold than this, yet perhaps a mixed word of mouth will keep it from having the kind of legs Inside Out had this summer. The film earned $16.0 million.
For the third consecutive week, “The Hunger Games” took the top spot at the box office. And falling in sixth again, The Night Before still struggles for relevance as an estimated $4.9 million is still not enough to give the flagging comedy much hope for theatrical box office gold. Methinks this will win out the weekend, even though Howard’s films of late tend to have openings in the range of $10 to $18 million. With a cast including Toni Collette and Adam Scott, Krampus scored despite a tepid 63% rating with critics on RottenTomatoes.com and a B- with audiences on CinemaScore.com. Last year, Mockingjay Part 1 earned $57 million over the long weekend and then fell 61% the following weekend, earning $22 million. The Good Dinosaur took an estimated $15.51 million for a $75.8 million total. “The Good Dinosaur” so far has earned a total of $55.4 million worldwide.
Spotlight geld on nicely in its fifth week, steady at #8 with $2.9 million. Chicago audiences were particularly receptive to the film’s message, handing the picture a $15,000-plus per-screen average on 22 screens. The Peter Sohn-directed film crossed the $100 million mark globally (its worldwide total is $131.4 million).

The Mother Teresa biopic The Letters was this weekend’s other nationwide release, and it debuted to only $802,000 in 886 theaters. Macbeth, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, also opened to $67,868 in five theaters, for a location average of $13,574. The animated movie dropped a sizable 60 percent, one of the worst for a Pixar film, and could only muster $15.5 million.
