Egypt’s state news agency says a scorching heat wave over the past week has killed at least 93 people and temperatures are expected to remain high in the coming days.
Additionally, 206 people were hospitalised after experiencing heat-related fatigue, including 63 in the Upper Egypt governorate of Sohag alone.
MENA issued the new death toll and said most of those killed were elderly. By Friday evening, 121 had already been discharged.
Egyptian summers are usually hot, but meteorologists say the current temperatures are exceptional.
Hundreds more people have been admitted to hospital suffering from heat exhaustion.

Egypt’s Ministry of Health told residents “not to leave home except for extreme necessity”, as it urged people to stay indoors and away from direct sunlight.
