Hot dogs on display for hot dog day

The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council created National Hot Dog Day, an “unofficial” national holiday.

National Hot Dog Day celebrates the country’s love affair with the cooked sausages wrapped in a soft bun that has become a culinary symbol of Americana with more than 30 billion consumed annually in the U.S., or an average of about 70 per person. It helps minimize bacterial growth and lengthen shelf life, and it also gives hot dogs their bright-red hue.

To mark the occasion, Saratoga’s newest hot dog joint, Hot Diggidy Dog, is offering up their fare of brats, specialty hot dogs, Italian and Polish sausage hot off on the rotisserie grill, but with a twist.

Every dog has its day, and in the case of hot dogs that’s today.

Officially, the day to honor the dog is the third Wednesday of July, as explained on the website. The rule is “dress the dog”, not the bun.

Full disclosure, my usual is one chili dog and one with relish, sauerkraut, ketchup, mustard, and hot peppers. “Yes, but I think hot dogs considering its history and popularity, it deserves its own category”, Lohr said. Of course, you can’t leave out Sheetz dogs and Sonic Drive-In dogs.
