House conservatives threaten GOP health care bill

The Freedom Caucus hasn’t agreed to just the Essential Health Benefits change, though leaders look apt to make that adjustment in a manager’s amendment to the legislation that hasn’t yet been released.

“I shared with the president my concerns and reservations with the bill as it is”.

While conservative Republicans, especially members of the “freedom caucus”, oppose the government’s continued involvement in citizen’s health care decisions, liberal Democrats object to any changes at all to Obamacare.

Actions to undermine the Affordable Care Act’s benefits are likely to trigger a backlash from patient advocacy groups and organizations representing doctors. With the clock ticking on the Rules Committee, leaders may decide to add the Essential Health Benefits portion and dare the Freedom Caucus to vote against the bill.

This time President Trump is on the same side as Republican leaders such as Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell, who are usually branded as the “establishment” by Trump supporters.

Lauren Aronson, spokeswoman for the tax-writing House Committee on Ways and Means, said the bill keeps the underlying policies of Obamacare that specify only U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents are eligible for the tax credits.

The political marriage of Ryan and Trump is an odd pairing as the speaker only reluctantly backed Trump past year and distanced himself from the presidential nominee after the audio emerged in October of Trump boasting about groping women.

Dent was one of about a dozen people invited to the meeting.

Still, Ryan has to navigate a House Republican conference that is not of one mind on health care.

One of the protesters being led out says she is part of ADAPT, an organization that promotes rights for people with disabilities.

Addressing reporters Tuesday, Ryan played down the possibility that the bill could fail Thursday and argued that conservatives should be pleased that many of their demands would probably be in the legislation. Ryan wants to re-write the tax code for the first time in 30 years after passing the health bill.

“I think it’s more important that we get it right for the American people, most Americans could care less what happens to the Freedom Caucus – they only care about what happens to them, and as long as I keep my focus on them I’m in good shape”, Meadows said.

“It could leave countless people with too little coverage to meet their health care needs and drive higher rates of uncompensated care at hospitals already struggling to cover their costs”, Bruce Siegel, president of America’s Essential Hospitals, said in a statement.

Trump rallied supporters Monday night in Louisville, Kentucky, alongside Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., after meetings and phone calls in Washington aimed at steadying the troubled legislation created to erase President Barack Obama’s signature health care law.

Facing the biggest test of his presidency to this point, Donald Trump is working to shore up support for a Republican plan to replace Obamacare.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders also gave signs negotiations were making headway late on Wednesday. It would repeal tax increases on the wealthy that Democrats used to pay for Obama’s coverage expansion.

One top Republican not authorized to speak about the whipping process said the leadership remains confident it will collect enough support but is weighing scheduling options. He said the Republican bill wouldn’t pass.

Several Republicans privately said Tuesday that Thursday’s vote could be postponed if leaders are unable to secure enough firm votes for passage beforehand.

Pence met with House conservatives Wednesday, where, according to a senior administration official, the vice president emphasized his history with House Republicans.

Brown said, “This is a risky bill, it’s written by people who don’t know what the hell they’re talking about”. The White House has also pledged to support Republicans who do vote for the bill the bill.

All three trace their political roots back to conservative politics on Capitol Hill, roots that White House officials say Trump administration has found invaluable in trying help usher Trump’s first piece of legislation through an unexpectedly hard Republican-controlled House. That’s a grave figure since united Democratic opposition means the measure crashes if 22 GOP lawmakers vote “no”. Investors are eagerly awaiting Thursday’s healthcare vote, which could be pivotal for Trump’s broader plans.
