House Speaker Paul Ryan ‘encouraged’ after Trump meeting

“Great conversation.” “Honest about our few differences”.

As head of the House Republican campaign organization, Walden works closely with House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., Ryan attracted headlines last week by saying he was not ready to support Trump.

Louisiana’s former Indian-American governor Bobby Jindal who had once called Trump a “shallow, unserious, substance-free, narcissistic egomaniac” and “a madman who must be stopped” too has come round to supporting the mogul.

“I would express concern about some of the tone and some of the remarks that he has made in the past and how important it is in this time of seeking unity that we speak with one voice and we show respect to all segments of the population”, said Capito.

Local five’s Steve Dent went out to find out how local Republicans feel about the rift. I thought it was great. I think it would be better if it were unified. “I think that’s going to, in the end, be enough to unify Republicans across the country”. Whether he can tack more to the right, or even the center, remains to be seen. “It will freeze money and it will put generations of liberal justices on the Supreme Court”. This means the #NeverTrump movement may face marginalization in the party, as dissenters get quieter and establishment Republicans make peace with being in the party of Trump.

And on Wednesday, it was reported that Trump’s campaign was looking to conservative economists to help slash the plan’s price tag.

Other Republican leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California have already moved toward Trump, on tiptoes in McConnell’s case.

But the speaker is coming under growing pressure from other Republicans to back off his objections and get on board with Trump. “We’re getting there”. However, Ryan acknowledged that there were bitter divisions within the party, and the schisms were not going to “magically disappear overnight”.

And it is certainly a problem for them.

“But again, I want to remind you this is the party’s convention”, said Priebus.

Carson and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie have both strongly endorsed Trump and joined his campaign. Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry has said he supports Trump. There may be some voters who don’t quite know yet what they think about Donald Trump and might be influenced by an endorsement from a politician they admire, but by November there won’t be too many of them.

“He’s a very warm and genuine person”, said Ryan, who declined to endorse Trump after the meeting at the Republican National Committee headquarters but suggested he was moving in that direction. Ryan is acting like he’s holding a pledge of eternal love and loyalty, and he doesn’t want to give it away in haste.

“It was a good listening session – it really was, on both sides”, said Sen. Trump refused Friday to reveal even the tax rate he pays, saying he would not do so until the IRS finishes auditing his returns.

“I was very encouraged with what I heard from Donald Trump today”, he said, appearing to be half talking himself into the statement. “The question is what is it that we need to do to unify the Republican Party and all strains of conservative wings of the party”. “It was important that we discussed our differences that we have, but it was also important that we discuss the core principles that tie us together”. Ryan, a policy-focused conservative, insists the GOP must be a party of ideas, and has championed an agenda that has drawn Trump’s scorn by pushing cuts in Medicare and other government programs.

Trump has panned Ryan’s approach. Unity is all well and good, but not if it leaves you damaged when the time comes to fulfill your own ambitions. At which point it’s on to 2020 with Ryan’s reputation intact.
