New York City officials received the same letter but opted not to close the schools in the city, saying they believed it was a hoax.
The email threat sent to members of the Los Angeles school board that prompted a city-wide school closure was lengthy and sometimes rambling, a law enforcement source told CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton.

Although classes in South Florida were in session, Thursday, the Miami-Dade and Broward County school boards planned to step up security at local public schools as a precautionary measure.

The contrasting responses and the backbiting that marked the day – Commissioner Bratton said Los Angeles had overreacted, and officials in Los Angeles defiantly said they had not – was to some extent a reflection of the long and subtle competition between these two coastal cities, whose leaders have sometimes shuttled back and forth. “They said schools are closed for investigation”.

“It is very easy in hindsight to criticize a decision based on results the decider could never have known”, Beck said. To reassure students and parents, LAUSD Police Chief Steve Zipperman said all officers at the district will be in uniform the remainder of the week for high visibility.
