Houston got a comeback win over Memphis despite losing QB Greg Ward Jr.to injury.
The goal? Go 1-0 in each of those ‘seasons’.
When the dust settled on another insane day of college football, only five undefeated teams remained and just one from Texas – the Houston Cougars.
“Everyone is heartbroken; things like this come a dime a dozen”, Memphis linebacker Wynton McManis said. Two turnovers and three Houston touchdowns later, that lead was gone. The hometown Coogs are 3 games away from an undefeated regular season and a berth to the first-ever American Athletic Conference Championship and face their toughest test of the year at home against the Memphis Tigers who come in looking to take revenge on last year’s loss to Houston as well as rebounding from a tough loss to conference foe Navy.
Ward averages 92.1 rushing yards per game, behind only Navy’s Keenan Reynolds. However, the Cougars had a bit of drama still to add to the game in the form of their emergency backup quarterback, sophomore Kyle Postma.

“There are a lot of plays in the game that ultimately determine the outcome”, Fuente said. Jake Elliott, who has hit 16 of 18 field goals this year, has the second most field goals made in school history (53). Quarterback Paxton Lynch has been outstanding with a 19/2 touchdown to interception ratio with a 69.1 completion rate and 9.2 yards per attempt. “At one point, we had a false start and two back-to-back holding penalties in a row, and the offense came off the field”. He finished with 26 carries for 116 yards and a score rushing and an unreal 61-yard touchdown catch. Tevin Jones also had a 25-yard TD run to give the Tigers a 34-14 lead to start the fourth quarter. “It wasn’t the last play, and it wasn’t first play”. He also carried the ball six times for 49 yard and one touchdown, including a 22-yard romp on a second and ten play in the fourth quarter. Running back Kenneth Farrow got the ball from seven yards out and punched it in for the score, cutting the deficit to six. The University of Houston know goes on the road as the travel to CT. Statistically, Lynch has thrown for 3014 yards and 19 touchdowns to only two interceptions. The Tigers outgained the Cougars 273-99 yards in the first half. Houston’s defense has allowed 18.7 points a game this season, while giving up just under 100 yards on the ground and 268 yards through the air.
