The Denver Broncos, with Peyton Manning retiring and heir-apparent starter Brock Osweiler signing with the Houston Texans this week, acquired veteran quarterback Mark Sanchez from the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday. The Texans started both T.J. Yates and Brandon Weeden late in the season when Hoyer missed three games because of two concussions in less than a month.
While the Eagles would have saved $3.5 million in cap room if they cut Sanchez, they will save $4.5 million by trading him because $1 million of his base salary in 2016 was guaranteed.
He said he called Denver general manager John Elway to tell him he planned to sign with the Texans as soon as he decided on Wednesday. This is a guy who inspired so little confidence in NY that they actually picked up Tim Tebow, who was replaced by Manning in Denver and now is a TV commentator.
The Broncos inquired with the San Francisco 49ers this week about Colin Kaepernick, who has requested a trade. He also has rushed 165 times for 451 yards with 13 touchdowns. Those terms were met by swift rejection from the Fitzpatrick camp. But they were outbid by the Texans, who signed Osweiler to a four-year, $72 million contract Thursday.
Osweiler appeared in eight games with seven starts last season for the Super Bowl champion Broncos. That’s something the Broncos could theoretically work with if their defense is able to step up again in another crucial year while the playoff and Super Bowl window remains open.
Sanchez joins 2015 seventh-round pick Trevor Siemian as the only quarterbacks now on the Broncos’ roster. That draft selection will likely be contingent on Sanchez’s playing time going forward with the Broncos.
“You’d probably have to give up not only picks, but players”, Stapleton said.
The Texans have been defined by their stout defense, which ranked third in the National Football League last season.
When asked what that meant for Sanchez, Pederson replied: “He could be the number three, but right now, we’re just evaluating that position as we do all the positions”.
A few weeks ago, Malik Jackson and Brock Osweiler bonded through a common goal with the Denver Broncos. The Denver Broncos got him for four years, two Super Bowls, including one championship.

For Sanchez, coming to a new team just vacated by a legendary quarterback could feel familiar, because he came to the Jets as a first-round pick in 2009, in the immediate aftermath of Brett Favre’s one season in NY.
