Houston tops Temple in inaugural American championship game
To nobody’s surprise, Ward was named the game’s most outstanding player.

Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer shredded the Owls for 299 passing yards and a touchdown with 143 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and USF’s Quinton Flowers torched them for 230 yards and two touchdowns through the air with 90 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Houston’s junior quarterback provided the highlight of the day, a slight-of-foot 47-yard touchdown run that froze three Temple defenders in their tracks. I wish we would have won, but we got down, and our kids fought back.
The Houston Cougars achieved a major victory on Saturday, and punched their ticket to a New Year’s Six bowl in the process.
Temple kept fighting and scored on the next series when Walker hit Anderson in the back of the end zone on a 13-yard scoring pass. Anderson had 12 receptions for 150 yards and the one touchdown.
This American Athletic Conference recap may contain materials and/or content provided courtesy of the Temple and Houston athletic departments. “They’re a fun team to watch”.
“We are working with the University of Houston police to review [Saturday’s] activities and will take swift and appropriate action including the termination of our current contract with CSC and any legal action deemed necessary”, said Hunter Yurachek, vice president of University of Houston’s Intercollegiate Athletics, in a statement. Temple’s magical season may have a blemish or two, but they can still finish off the year with a bang and give the seniors a well deserved win. “This is a hurtful loss, but we have a lot of accomplishments”. Ward got the score for Houston on a 47-yard quarterback keep, making it a 17-point lead for the hosts with 5:32 left in the first half. Ward walked off after a couple of minutes and was attended to by medical staff on the sideline, but didn’t miss a play.
Temple put points on the board with less than two minutes to go in the half on a 40-yard field goal by PK Austin Jones. “He’s still got some polishing to do in terms of his quarterback play”.
Henry tied the SEC record for touchdowns in a season with 23 and eclipsed Herschel Walker’s 34-year-old conference mark for yards rushing in a season with 1,986 with at least one more game left.
On Temple’s next possession the Owls moved quickly down the field until Houston’s Elandon Roberts forced a fumble that was recovered by his teammate Trevon Stewart.
After the teams exchanged punts, Houston took a 10-0 lead when Ty Cummings finished off a nine-play, 42-yard drive with a 24-yard field goal.

Javin Webb’s 1-yard run on the ensuing possession gave Houston a 7-0 lead.
