How old is too old for trick-or-treating?

Police will be carrying out high-visibility patrols on Saturday to deal with any anti-social behaviour and a “no trick-or-treat” flyer has also been made available on the Thames Valley Police website for anyone who does not want trick-or-treaters visiting. “Unfortunately there have been a few cases where things have been altered or doctored”, said Wooldridge. Mother Nature is also creating a scare for several parishes.

According to police, Halloween is a popular night for criminals and when people are out trick or treating, they are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to their local RCMP. Do not enter a home to receive a treat, especially abandoned buildings.

Only go to homes with lights on.

Watch for children darting out into the street.

Costumes should be flame retardant, and be decorated with reflective tape.

Do not pass stopped vehicles, they could be dropping off children.

Advising kids not to eat candy or treats until they are checked by a parent is also important.

“If you are planning on going trick or treating, please be mindful of this advice and if a house is displaying a “no trick or treaters” sign please respect this”. If there was a candy I could have, I’d go for it. If not, I’d just back away with the rest of my group and say thank you. The garage is set up to have everyone inside taking cover from the rain as they wait to make their way to the candy stops. Remember when in doubt, throw it out.

“If children are able to participate they should be accompanied by an adult”, he said. Do not eat homemade treats unless they come from someone you know and trust.

“A safe Halloween means seeing and being seen”, said Nick Jarmusz, director of public affairs for AAA Wisconsin. Make sure everyone is using sidewalks whenever possible and is looking both ways to cross the street.

Homeowners should examine their property for hazards, removing any unsecured objects that might cause a child to trip and fall.

Additionally, starting Halloween night AAA’s free Tipsy Tow Program will be running from 6 p.m.to 6 a.m. Which offers a free tow service for those drinking.

Make sure all costume accessories are safe: check that knives and swords don’t have sharp edges, and anything small can’t be swallowed etc.

Have fun but not at expense of others
