Penn’s interview with Guzman sparked criticism in the United States.
“There is no question in my mind but that the DEA and the Mexican government are tracking our movements”, he wrote. Del Castillo has not commented.

However he sidestepped the question when asked directly about Penn.

Kate del Castillo had been contacted by Guzman’s lawyers years earlier after she had addressed Guzman in an open letter asking him to stop trafficking in drugs and start “trafficking in love” instead.
