How to disable iPhone feature that could cost you hundreds of dollars

The new “Wi-Fi Assist” feature draws no attention to itself, sitting like a latecomer to class at the bottom of the “Cellular” tab in Settings.

Users will be able to this by heading over to the Settings menu and clicking on the “on” button to activate cellular data for certain apps. Jim Ray, an iPhone user, reported that his mobile data use skyrocketed to 7GB this month from the usual 1-2GB a month.

What’s bad is that users who don’t have unlimited data may overuse their allotted data, resulting in unexpected charges and fees. Switching the setting to the off mode should bring your consumption back in line with your normal usage. And Apple have set it so that the Wi-Fi Assist feature is automatically set on.

According to Wayne Williams, the author of the report published by Beta News, he experienced the problem after upgrading his iPhone 5S from the iOS 8 to the newest version.

It is created to ensure that you always have a satisfactory web connection, and automatically switches your phone from Wi-Fi to cellular data.

Scroll way down to Wi-Fi Assist.

This settings screen is also where you can check out your mobile data usage.

Another solution would be to leave Wi-Fi Assist on and only turn on the cellular data connection for the app you need to have connected to the Internet at all times. However the “Wi-Fi Assist” issue seems an extraordinarily arrogant and short-sighted move, even on the part of a software developer and hardware manufacturer as dictatorial and inflexible as Apple.

If you’re on a limited data package then you might want to switch Wi-Fi assist off, and you can do that with a simple fix.

Apple CEO Tim Cook introduces the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6sPlus during an Apple media event in San Francisco, Calif., September 9, 2015. Since the feature comes enabled by default, most users of Apple devices who have upgraded to iOS 9 are unaware about it until they have already run up a huge bill. If you’re not aware that your phone is using your cellular data rather than Wi-Fi, you could be racking up unexpected surcharges by accidentally going over your limit.
