To get the EITC, workers must file a tax return, even if they are not required to file, and specifically claim the credit. However, it’s possible a tax return may require additional review and take longer.
The federal EITC for taxpaying low-to-moderate-income working people reduces the amount of taxes owed and refunds the difference if the credit is larger than the amount owed. “We do their taxes right in front of them and go over it with them before they leave”.
“It is our hope that residents will take advantage of this opportunity to see whether they are eligible for the credit and to get assistance on tax preparation”, Mayor Mark Stodola said.

For anyone who wishes to attend the VITA program, participants should bring a photo ID, their social security card – or a copy of their social security card – and documents that they’ve previously received such as tuition statements or tax documents.
The college has offered the service for more than 30 years, in part to steer the public away from predatory tax preparers.
She says getting the program up and running was “challenging” but noted that the center will be manned with seasoned volunteers and has the space, computers, internet, copying machines and more to make the program run efficiently.
Earned income and adjusted gross income must be each less than $47,747 ($53,267 if married and filing jointly) with three or more qualifying children; $44,454 ($47,974 if married and filing jointly) with two qualifying children; $39, 131 ($44,651 if married and filing jointly) with one qualifying child and $14,820 ($20,330 if married filing jointly) with no qualifying children.
IRS-certified tax counselors will assist taxpayers in preparing and e-filing tax returns on Fridays, Feb. 5, through April 15, from 11 a.m.to 3 p.m.at the Magnolia Community Center (2550 34th Ave. W.). For an appointment, call (206) 386-4235.
