Hollywood’s biggest stars will come out in force Sunday at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The Oscars 2017 will be streamed online through the ABC Go online service as well as the ABC TV app.
Amazon’s “Manchester by the Sea”, starring Casey Affleck, is nominated for Best Picture, marking the first time that a streaming company, Amazon Studios, has been nominated in the category.
And with two Oscars going to “Hacksaw Ridge”, is Mel Gibson a sure thing to direct that “Suicide Squad” sequel now?
The 89th Oscars ceremony is Sunday, and even though the awards have been around for 89 years, there are still age-old issues.
Though they’re certainly not lacking in attention, a number of the Oscar nominees for best picture actually don’t get that much attention at the box office.
These discrepancies also hinge on how widely a film is released; Suicide Squad opened on 4,255 screens, whereas Hell or High Water managed little more than a third of that at its peak.
After some uncertainty about whether they would be able to enter the USA, the Syrian first responders who are the subjects of “The White Helmets” have said they will be there to receive their Oscar, should the film win for best documentary short. It Happened One Night remains a template for the era’s screwball comedies and the rom-coms into which they evolved. The bearded Gibson, for a decade a pariah in Hollywood, was seated front and centre for the show, and was a frequent presence throughout.
Best Foreign Language Film award went to the Iranian film The Salesman.
Edelman dedicated the award to the victims of the famous crime, Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. They will also be able to engage with exclusive video footage of this year’s Oscar nominees, including Pharrell, Ruth Negga, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Damien Chazelle, among others. For the first time ever, a person of colour is nominated in each acting category.

However, this does not mean the Academy Awards have completely avoided making political statements in the past 82 years. That it was essentially a long-form television production hints that maybe the theatrical-bound academy is grudgingly acknowledging that the barriers that guard movies from other forms of filmed storytelling are crumbling as surely as our quaint notions of the Constitution. “Good Morning America” and ESPN correspondent Chris Connelly is returning as the official greeter of The Oscars red carpet, which includes welcoming nominees, presenters and performers to the show.
