How Tony Romo has impacted the standings in Dallas

“Tony has a broken bone in his back”. Conventional wisdom would indicate the Cowboys are much less of a threat with rookie Dak Prescott, a fourth-round draft pick from Mississippi State, replacing Romo.

But what happens if more than just some of Prescott’s preseason success translates? But Prescott started the season as Tyler Russell’s backup.

As veteran Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo went down for at least half the season, the collective hearts of Cowboys fans went in to their throats.

I know this would be a good problem to have, but what do you think this coaching staff and team do should Dak exceed all expectations with his performance and have this team sitting at say 6-2 upon Romo’s return?

Stranger things have happened. He arrived in our lives in a way nearly identical to Tom Brady: on national TV in place of Drew Bledsoe. “We’ve got a chance to develop that energy, that asset so to speak, with Dak, and have both, because Tony will be back”.

Garrett mirrored Elliott’s stance, saying that it’s not that he was really doing anything wrong, but like most young players who enter the league, he must realize that he is under a lot more scrutiny now than ever before.

Bledsoe, of course, never regained his job and Brady guided the Patriots to the Super Bowl.

It may seem a huge statement to think Prescott could lead the Cowboys to the No. 1 rushing attack in the league, but it’s truly the surrounding pieces around him and his dual threat ability that make this bold statement possible. This – when combined with Prescott’s collegiate numbers – is why it’s not impossible to envision a scenario in which Prescott keeps the Cowboys afloat until Romo is able to return. As CBS Sports national columnist Bill Reiter wrote earlier Monday, the Romo era is coming to an unfortunate early ending. Secondly, an owner who’s proven time and again he’ll do anything to win is unlikely to pull Prescott if he and the Cowboys are on a roll.

Predictably, Romo has been supportive of the rookie quarterback.

Other veteran options include Austin Davis, who was just cut by the Cleveland Browns; Matt Barkley, who might not make the Arizona Cardinals’ roster; Dustin Vaughan, a former Cowboys practice squadder who is fighting for a spot with the Pittsburgh Steelers; and the Detroit Lions’ Dan Orlovsky, who very briefly overlapped with Cowboys offensive coordinator Scott Linehan in Detroit.

“It’s a different feel around here this time”, Jones said. This is still a gut punch. “But the reality is, Tony’s going to come back for us and play great, we believe”. The hell with that. We are going to game plan the right way.

In those 50 passes, he has completed 39 of them for five touchdowns and zero interceptions. And none of those rookies were dropped into an offense this talented. But (insert necessary disclaimer) it’s the preseason. The most recent prognosis is that he is expected to miss six to ten weeks.

Only two seasons have passed since Kaepernick guided San Francisco to the NFC championship game, but Blaine Gabbert is leading the quarterback battle in San Francisco.

But don’t expect his longtime tight end and friend to count him out, even after his third back injury and at the age of 36.
