The eventual winners are decided by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and announced in a ceremony on January 10.

Ronan will go head to head with American actress Brie Larson, also nominated in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture category for her harrowing performance in “Room”.

It’s not Hollywood glamorous, but Will Smith insists he was sleeping early Thursday morning when the Golden Globe nominations were taking place. No clear favorite has emerged, though a few films have become mandatory viewing – “Carol” (five nominations), “The Revenant” (four nominations) and “The Big Short” (four nominations).

Eddie Redmayne, best actor nominee for “The Danish Girl”: “Having the opportunity to help tell Lili and Gerda’s story has been a great privilege for me, and I am hugely grateful for the guidance, generosity and insight given to me by the transgender community”.

At least screen veteran Sylvester Stallone, who was left out of Wednesday’s SAG nominations, earned a spot in the best supporting category for reprising his role as Rocky Balboa in “Creed”.

Speaking after the nominations were announced, he said: “I am incredibly grateful to the HFPA for having included me in such a brilliant troupe of actors”.

The Revenant, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, snagged nominations for Best Motion Picture, Best Director, Best Original Score and Leo got Best Actor.

In the feature film category, Netflix’s Beasts of No Nation received a nod for best lead actor in a drama (Idris Elba).

More surprising were the two nominations for “Flesh & Bone”, which scored a surprise nomination for limited series or television movie and for lead actress Sarah Hay.

“Lawrence’s turn as the Miracle Mop inventor in “Joy” will fight it out with McCarthy’s “Spy”, Amy Schumer for Trainwreck”, Maggie Smith for “The Lady In The Van” and Lily Tomlin for “Grandma” in the best actress – musical or comedy list. According to tweets from Australian film critic Simon Miraudo, the Globes’ official Twitter account kept misidentifying presenter America Ferrera as Gina Rodriguez.

This also reflects that Netflix’s move of getting deeper into production of its original program is paying off. It is likely that as Netflix will continue to expand its original content base, it will develop more prestigious foothold in the award nominations. Musical or comedy: Casual (Hulu), Mozart in the Jungle (Amazon), Orange is the New Black (Netflix), and last year’s victor, Transparent (Amazon). The show will air on NBC.
