Jimmy Howard made 36 saves to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks at The Joe. During that nine game losing streak the Canucks were shut out four times.

Mason looked sharp after sitting the past four games. So is a lack of real and constant traffic at the opposition net, although they were better at that in the third period Thursday. They were blanked twice, scored just 11 goals and just one power-play goal. Couturier was able to poke home a loose puck in the deep crease. He had hoped to win a job out of training camp with the Detroit Red Wings. Instead, they compiled 5 points, leaving them with 17 points, where they should be at 18.

“None of us were at our best tonight”, Hakstol said.

Athanasiou, who’s one of the Wings’ speediest skaters, helped snapped the Wings’ five-game winless streak and also ended an even longer streak of non-success in Philadelphia.

“It did in the American League up to now, so I can’t wait to test it on the ice tomorrow night”, he said. I think that’s what I’m showing right now by the start I had and I just need to bring that up here. “The ice is good and you had to be prepared or you’d get destroyed”.

In Junior B hockey – the Leamington Flyers moved up to second place in the Western Conference after beating Lambton Shores 4-1. The Flyers goalies had stopped seven straight shootout shots this season until the final goal on Tuesday night.

The Canucks are still last in the league with an average of just 1.8 goals per game, but they’re actually 14th in the league in total shots on goal, with 421 in 15 games or an average of 28.1 shots per game. That distinction went to Tyler Bertuzzi. In this instance, aggressive play paid off. “The goalie was pretty sharp on their side”, Giroux said. Larkin opened the scoring just 32 seconds into the game when he put in the rebound of Zetterberg’s shot.

So, I wouldn’t expect a call-up, and if there was to be one, it would be before the Tampa game, on a very temporary stint for who gets the call.

Wings coach Jeff Blashill said he had a similar conversation with Mantha as with Vanek at the start of the season: “Be accountable defensively, win your one-on-one battles and track back to our net hard”. That led to a set-up for Tomas Tatar.

In the end, the Canucks’ undoing was doing nothing yet again on the power play. “You’ve just got to give him the puck and you know he’ll create offense”.

“We’re excited, it’s going to be a big challenge for us”, Gustav Nyquist said.

In 10 games with the Red Wings last season, Mantha had two goals and two assists. “We have to figure this out, because we can’t keep saying this every night”.

“Obviously, I want to try to bring a scoring touch a little bit”, he said.
