HRH The Duchess of Cambridge visits HMP Send
She visited the RAPt (Rehabilitation for Addicted Prisoners Trust) unit at the prison, which is the only centre in the country to have a six-month long, 12-step based programme for female prisoners.

Amanda Cockran, who runs the programme at Send, said the duchess made quite an impact. The charity aims to help those in prison and in the community dealing with addiction overcome their issues and “lead positive lives”.
The Duchess said: “I was reminded today how addictions lie at the heart of so many social issues and how substance misuse can play such a destructive role in vulnerable people’s lives”.
“Because the work that goes on here is behind the prison walls it’s not easily accessible or known so to have somebody as high-profile as The Duchess come along it’s wonderful”.

HMP Send has 282 women prisoners, with nearly three-quarters of them with long-term sentences of four years or more and a number serving life terms.
Animated: Dressed in a smart blue coat, the mother of two was remarkably animated as she watched the quadrennial tournament’s opening game.
Despite Queen Elizabeth and Camilla Parker-Bowles’ outmaneuver, Kate Middleton showed no signs of defiance as she continued her royal duties with bright-eyed appearance and forced smiles.
The prisoners only discovered the identity of their VIP visitor half an hour before she arrived.
She later broke into a smile and applauded enthusiastically as England’s Mike Brown scored the team’s first try at Twickenham Stadium in London.
Middleton met with several prisoners, who told her how they ended up in jail and how addiction played a part in the process.

The offender, who will be leaving Send in December 2016, said Kate commented about the aprons: “She said George is going to need it for his painting and colouring and said say thank you to all the ladies for contributing to the honey and cakes”.
