Hroniss Grasu carted off with noncontact right knee injury

Grasu, who was selected by the Bears in the 2015 NFL Draft, was hoping to be the team’s starting center when the season began, but those hopes could be dashed after he suffered a knee injury during the Bears’ workout at Soldier Field Saturday.

Although the severity is still unknown, Head Coach John Fox described it as a non-contact injury that appears to be “fairly serious”. Grasu was hurt while blocking downfield on a screen pass. It was clear he had not been hit or tangled up in other players.

Grasu fell to the ground without being touched during Saturday’s practice. There were noticeable seams in the sod in spots around the playing surface. Fox altered the schedule for the team’s annual Family Fest practice previous year, holding a 36-play live scrimmage.

Veteran Ted Larsen has started 10 career games at center and could be the next in line. Rookie guard Cody Whitehair has practiced some at the center position. “You guys have seen all the people that have played there”, Fox said. “It’s not like we have only one. We’ll adjust. That’s what you do”.
