If you keep up with the Cowboys, at all, you’ve watched how well he’s played in the preseason, but then you come right back to the fact that he is a rookie quarterback, and he has not seen what he is going to see next weekend. According to Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the team is now leaning toward the latter portion of that time frame, and it now looks as if Romo will be placed on injured reserve/designated for return so the Cowboys can replace him on the 53-man roster for the time being.

Romo suffered an L1 compression fracture in his back against the Seattle Seahawks on August 25, and sources told paper that the timetable for his return is close to the length of time he would be sidelined if placed on injured reserve/designated to return.
“We’re certainly getting our hands around it, ” executive vice president Stephen Jones said. It appears that Romo will miss substantial time – up to 10 weeks – and it is bringing up some questions about his future in the NFL.
If Romo misses 10 weeks, he’ll be out until at least the October 30 game against the Eagles. Putting him on injured reserve would free up a roster spot and they could re-call him to the active roster when he’s healthy.

Despite Romo’s recent injury history, including twice breaking his collarbone last season, Jones insists the team is not concerned about his durability.
It’s a delicate situation because if the Cowboys think Romo can return sooner they will not put him on injured reserve.
“He’s very driven to do what it takes to get back”, Jones said of Romo.
If Prescott impresses, the Cowboys likely will not be in the rush they were a year ago to get Romo back into the game.

Now he needs to get back on the field to prove it. The key word, as he well knows, is he’s got to stay healthy and he’s got to be able to play, but if he does that, mentally and his knowledge of this game and what our offense is about, I think is the best it’s ever been.
