Huge Northern California blaze burns lodge, threatens camp

In just 2½ hours, more than 2,500 people fled nearby cabins, campgrounds and the Hume Lake Christian Camp as flames crossed the Kings River and Highway 180.
More than 12,000 firefighters are battling 17 wildfires across California.
Lightning caused that fire, authorities said.
The Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area, a popular motorbike terrain park, was evacuated after the flames were reported Wednesday.
Eighteen wildfires are now raging in California, and 10 states around the country are reporting large fires.
“This is the first time since 2006 that (the Defense Department) has mobilized federal active duty military personnel” to fight wildfires, Davis said. The mobilization signals how strong the conflagrations have become.
The guard members create firebreaks as hand crews, build floating bridges for firefighters, and also fly aircraft that drop water, officials said.
The US Army is sending hundreds of troops to help tackle wildfires raging across parched California, authorities have said, while also warning of the growing risk posed by drone pilots flying over affected areas.
