Hugo Lloris backs Tottenham Hotspur to cope in Harry Kane absence

“We need to be positive now the damage is done”, said Pochettino.

Pochettino is preparing his side for the visit of Gillingham in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, before travelling to Middlesbrough on Saturday for the Premier League tie.

For England, Kane is also now out of World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia next month and is also a major doubt for the home clash with Scotland in November.

Midfield duo Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier limped off against Sunderland also, but Pochettino said they are not expecting any “big issues” once they are fully assessed later today.

“I told you that we needed to learn and feel that it is a different competition the Premier League and to share the Champions League, and we need to improve”.

“We all felt guilty but the most important thing is the way you react, and yesterday was a very good signal for the manager, the club and the fans too”.

The player himself tweeted on Tuesday afternoon: “Injuries are never nice but part of the game – working hard to get fit as soon as possible!”

It was a hard fought victory for the League One side, as they took the game against the Premier League opponents to extra time before striker Bradley Dack scored the match victor in the 102 minute to score a famous victory and set up a tie against Spurs. Sunderland finished with 10 men after Adnan Januzaj was sent off for a foot-up challenge on Ben Davies, having already been booked.

Pochettino had been critical of his side’s energy levels in their defeat to Monaco last week but the Argentinian was satisfied, even if it took a hashed clearance from Papy Djilobodji for Kane to break the deadlock.

“All the lads are very passionate and love football, but sometimes it doesn’t go in the way you want”, Lloris added.

“There’s nearly no-one who deserves it more than him so everyone in the dressing room is very happy for him”. Only he needs time to adapt his game to the team.

But Pochettino played down the severity of their problems.

“For him last season was tough for him”.

“The qualities – it’s only looks, his body and the way that he plays – remember a little bit from the beginning of Messi”, Pochettino said.

“I said, “okay, always my door is open” and we decide to stay”. He is a quiet person, a nice person.
