Hull City hero on the way out

Mohamed Diame is set to sign for Newcastle United after Hull City failed to persuade him to stay at the KC Stadium with an improved contract offer.

Magpies boss Rafa Benitez has lined up Senegal worldwide Diame as a potential replacement for French star Moussa Sissoko, who continues to be linked with a big-money exit.

With only a year remaining on Diame’s contract, it may be Hull’s last chance to cash in on the man that scored the goal that took the Tigers to the Premier League.

Hull will not want to lose Diame, who has scored 13 goals in 50 league appearances for the Tigers since arriving from West Ham in 2014, but they may be powerless to block the deal now his release fee has been activated.

Sissoko, meanwhile, went public with his desire to leave United after the Euro 2016 final, in which France were beaten by Portugal.

His return to Tyneside was decidedly low-key, with his non-attendance at the open training session at St James’ Park expected as he underwent medical tests at the club’s Benton training base.

Talks are continuing with targets today as they look to have their squad in place for the weekend when they play Fulham in their Championship opener.
