Bob Schoelkopf, founding director of Marine Mammal Stranding Center, told Press of Atlantic City that it is more likely that the juvenile whale may have been sick or lost its mother.
SNJ Today is a Southern New Jersey news and information source based in Millville, New Jersey that is dedicated to providing current stories related specifically to South Jersey.
The whale was 33 feet long, and 20 tons, and officials believe it was dead for several days before it washed ashore. It was also struck by a ship at one point, Scholekopf added, though he suspects this occurred after the whale had already died.
A necropsy will be performed on the beach Saturday morning to learn how it died. They survive on krill and small fish.

Currently, it is believed 30,000-40,000 humpback whales are left, which is around 30% of their original population.
