Hundreds feared dead as South Asian quake toll rises

The Times of India reported that strong tremors were felt across New Delhi and the national capital region at around 2.45pm local time (9.15am Irish time).

The girls were killed when a stampede broke out in their school in Taluqan city, the capital of the remote province of Takhar.

More than 150 people have been killed in a powerful quake which has hit north-eastern Afghanistan and Pakistan. A wall collapsed in Sargodha, killing one woman and injuring 10 people, while three were injured in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Dawn reported.

Quick in response, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said on his Twitter update that, he has asked for an urgent assessment and that India is ready to provide assistance to Afghanistan & Pakistan.

The natural disaster was said to be one of the most powerful ever recorded in Pakistan’s history.

Alice Jefferson added: “We are awaiting more information on damage reports in Afghanistan and north-western Pakistan through news alerts”.

The United States Geological Survey says the quake measured 7.5.

The quake was 120 miles deep, and its centre was around 51 miles southeast of Feyzabad in the country’s remote Hindu Kush mountain range. He said there were reports of damage in northern and eastern provinces, but the extent was unclear because mobile phone networks were down. At least five people were reported dead in Nangarhar.
