Hundreds gather for San Fernando Valley Veterans Day Parade

We honor you, fine men and women, on this your special day. A temporary halt of fighting was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I. It was then known as “the Great War”.

The hope goal and focus of programs like this, such as at the middle school, is that it is important to honor and thank veterans not just one day a year, but 365 days a year.

There were many different organizations from the community there, all saluting those who have served our country.

The parade assembles near the Florence Events Center on Quince Street and continues to Bay Street before ending at the Veteran’s Memorial Park. Vietnam War veterans weren’t welcomed home with parades or thanked much for their service. Among those walking in the parade was Elmer Folsom, who came home from World War II and settled into a life as a teacher and eventually a dairy farmer.

The City of Callaway brought out the red, white and blue and displayed Old Glory to mark this day for veterans.

“We have to remind people what happened 70 years ago to make sure it doesn’t happen again”, he said.

“It’s tradition, I came here to be with my brothers and sisters”, his brother Gordon Fox said, who served in the Marine Corps in the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1972.

Wednesday morning in Dublin, U.S. Senator Rob Portman presented him with the bronze medal, among others for his heroic service in the Vietnam War more than 40 years ago.

Inevitably, someone says something demonstrating confusion over the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

“Vietnam vets had a hard time at one time”, said Larry Fisk, a Vietnam veteran himself.

Veterans we talked to say they want to get the word out about what it means to serve, often times in risky situations, regardless of whether they are from the guard, the reserve, or active duty.

We celebrate and honor our veterans who have been selfless in what they have sacrificed and given for us.
