Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday held on the third Monday of January.

It may have been a day off from classes for students at CMU, but many still took the time to give back to the to the Mount Pleasant community and honor Martin Luther King Jr.

Hundreds of people marched from the Frank Johnson Recreation Center on Pio Nono Avenue, all the way to downtown Macon where they joined other marchers at the Macon-Bibb Government Center.

“We need to deal with issues that Dr. King dedicated his life for, for example, we don’t have a civil rights commission for the State of Colorado that protects the rights of citizens”.

These children haven’t lived in a world with Dr. King, but their world is very different because of him.

Because of high tensions, when Civil Rights leaders including King came to speak at Tougaloo, they weren’t allowed to stay in the hotels, so her parents welcomed him into their home. “I’ve only missed one since then”.

“They could’ve done so much to stop this from occurring and when your put in or elected in, it is your duty, okay, to do your job”, Grimes said.

“Martin Luther King’s dream is still an ongoing work in progress”.

We are inviting you to participate in our efforts to keep Dr. King’s legacy alive by encouraging our youth to participate in this year’s essay contest.

“We really want to bring people together and really unify, not only our community, as the African-American community, but all communities across Chicago”, said Perri Irmer, president and CEO of the DuSable Museum.

“Every day you have an opportunity to make a difference, I do not care if it is small or big, just do it because it will come back tenfold in so many different ways”, said Rodigga.
