Hundreds more troops sent to northern England amid severe flooding
The prime minister is expected to visit flood-hit areas of northern England later, as swamped communities continue to battle against raging waters.

“As I say, though – let’s have a look and see if more needs to be done and whether the flood defences need to be made higher than they have already, and that’s exactly what we’ll look at”.
Hundreds were forced to leave their homes as residential streets were turned into muddy rivers, taking shelter in emergency rest centres as waters reached record levels.
Nearly 200 other flood warnings are in force in the north of England as well as the Midlands and parts of Wales.
“A further 1,000 military personnel are being held in reserve should the situation worsen”, Mr Cameron’s Downing Street office said, calling the flooding an “unprecedented event”.
An extra 200 soldiers are being sent in to work with the 300 already on the ground, aiding hundreds of rescuers and volunteers who have been on high alert since Christmas Day due to heavy rain forecasts.
Meanwhile, the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has rejected distanced itself from calls for Britain to apply to the European Union for emergency funding to help those effected by the floods.
Mr Cameron rejected any suggestion of a north/south divide, insisting the Government spends “more per head of the population on flood defences in the north than we do in the south”.
“What matters is that we spend the right amount in the right places, and that’s what our review will make sure is happening”.
Hundreds of people have also been evacuated elsewhere in Yorkshire and Lancashire.
Strategy director Paul Bircham said in a statement: “We understand how hard it is to be without power and that’s why we are pleased that we have been able to restore power to the majority of customers in Rochdale this evening”.
The Prime Minister has paid a visit to areas worst hit by flooding in Yorkshire, as the clean-up operation is stepped up.
The National Lottery cash is now be available for clubs, charities and councils in all areas affected by Storm Eva. Over the past 2 days temporary defences were set up in Lancashire in St Michaels and Ribchester to reduce the risk of flooding and the the Environment Agency worked with the Army to deploy temporary flood defences and sandbags to communities at risk in Warwick Bridge, Braithwaite and Appleby in Cumbria.
The government announced that every household affected will received £500 for temporary accommodation and immediate costs, and a further £5000 to help flood proof their homes.
“Climate change and inadequate preparation… ensure that the floods will become a painfully regular future of British life”, it said in an editorial.
Leeds Central MP Hilary Benn, who described the flooding as the worst he had seen in the centre of the city, called for increased investment, saying climate change was bringing wetter winters. Minutes of the committee’s October meeting, which would have been distributed to senior civil servants and ministers, show Professor Colin Mellors’ warnings against central government cuts.

“This month’s weather and flooding are yet another reminder of the foolhardy stupidity of the Government making spending cuts to the Environment Agency”.
